Apple needs to learn to work with publishers.

I spend about a third of my daily iPad time reading the FT every morning. If the app gets pulled or no longer works (because Apple insists on getting their cut of my annual subscription), I will make the very easy decision to get an Android tablet next.

Same goes for my Economist and WSJ apps. Combined, I probably spend 75% of my time on my iPad reading these publications. Take them away, and I'm gone.

My loyalty is to the publisher and the quality of their material. It is NOT to Apple. And one less iPad owner also means one less App store and/or iTunes customer.

Apple should tread very lightly here.

    Image (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/20/ios-platform-reach-exceeds-androids-by-59-in-u-s/)

While much has been made of Android's rapid gains in the smartphone market that has seen it surge past the iPhone, a perhaps equally vocal contingent has pointed out that iOS is much larger than just the iPhone and that Android has only just started pushing into the tablet market and has yet to forge an effort into the non-phone touch device market.

But yesterday, comScore finally put some numbers behind (http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/4/Apple_iOS_Platform_Outreaches_Android_by_59_Percent_in_U.S) that latter argument, building off its earlier report (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/04/verizon-iphone-leads-u-s-mobile-phone-sales-in-february-as-android-surge-continues/) regarding February data on smartphone usage to reveal that the overall iOS platform of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch reaches 37.9 million users in the U.S., 59% greater than the reach of Android.Rather than simply counting device sales, comScore's data tracks individual users, making that 37.9 million number reflective of users (some of whom have more than one iOS device) rather than devices directly.

As a result, Apple's iOS reaches 16.2% of the 234 million mobile platform users in the United States, with Android registering at 10.2% with 23.8 million users.

But perhaps most notably, comScore finds that there is not a tremendous amount of overlap in users, with only 10.5% of iOS users accessing the system from multiple devices such as an iPhone and iPad or iPhone and iPod touch.
    Image (http://images.macrumors.com/article/2011/04/20/155149-comscore_ipad_smartphone_feb11.jpg)

The survey also shows a broad appeal for the iPad, moving well beyond existing iPhone users to appeal to users of smartphones from a number of other companies. In particular, LG, Samsung, and Nokia smartphone users are overrepresented when it comes to iPad ownership, while users of Research in Motion and Motorola smartphones are somewhat underrepresented in iPad ownership. According to the survey, only 27.3% of iPad owners are also iPhone owners, while 17.5% are BlackBerry owners, 14.3% are Samsung owners, and 12.1% are LG owners.

Article Link: iOS Platform Reach Exceeds Android's By 59% in U.S. (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/20/ios-platform-reach-exceeds-androids-by-59-in-u-s/)

I don't think that they should include the ipod touch. There is no android equivalent. iOS has been out longer too, they will have previous market saturation (android released october 2008 more than a year after iOS). We need to look at the growth numbers.

I like how they can track individual users (scares me).

Its never a good thing when the guy behind the reason we buy Mac's leaves. :(

For the user who mentioned that he was behind OS X flaws (you mentioned iTunes bloat) - you are wrong. iTunes isn't run directly by the Mac OS development team, it has its own department. There's probably a little crossover however generally he wouldn't have much input on iTunes.

since almost no one buys a Mac and almost everyone buys an idevice, no one cares about him leaving.

the world has moved past computers being the center of personal computing

Hi Zen. Yeah i understand I need to change the firmware. I was focusing all my panic on the kernal crashes and will look at installing the cards today and updating the firmware whilst i'm at it.

Thank you very very much for the assistance you have provided. It really is 'above & beyond' and really marks you out as one of the top contributors to this forum.

I've spent some time in the non PPC section and it seems to be full of haters, and mac-bashers - 'why hasn't the new ****** got ******? Apple are so crap/expensive/dont care about the little man' etc etc etc ad infinitum.

It seems the camaraderie of keeping older machines running makes for a more peaceful, happy section of the site.

i have an 80gb ipod classic, when i eject it from my computer it says "ok to disconnect" ... and then a meter goes across the screen and it goes into the normal (usable) screen.

so is it ok to disconnect when it says "ok to disconnect"

or do i have to wait for the meter thing to fill?

this isnt even a big issue its just sort of a pet peeve that i have, for the record i usually just wait the 5 seconds for the meter to fill. its just weird that it tells me its ok before the meter starts.

All I can say is its about freakin' time. Next, how about a dynamic web-based interface for iDisk, so Windoze users don't have to install an application to use it from the desktop, and with the ability to individually password-protect folders?

    A surprising, but welcome, twist.

I thought it was the frigid version of your floor-hockey league. ;)

No- totally different group of people. Great bunch of guys.

That's actually very surprising (in a good way). People usually aren't as sensitive to that word as they are with the N word, especially straight people.

That was the thing that clinched it for me. When they told me that story, I knew I had found some good people.

May I use that as my signature? :p

    Yep. ;)

if you really like hot hatches: Fiat finally delivers the ultimate hatchback car ;)

    Ferrari FF revealed (http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/254990/)

honestly the thing is looking like one of the weirdest frankstein cars ever made:
the shape of the old BMW M Coupe (which i madly liked)
the front looking botched together from a porsche, peugeot 407 and a nissan GT (which i all liked)
the back like a honda having mated with a BMW Z4
then 4 seats _and_ all wheel drive ?

looks like Ferrari desperatly needed their own Panamera ... now jsut wait untill ferrari releases a SUV

And when FCS4 comes out it will be a year ahead of CS5. What's your point?
I think his point was that if the next version of FCP is only playing 'catch up' to CS5 and MC5 it will quickly be eclipsed by the next iterations of those programs (especially if FCP stays on a two year product cycle). FCP needs to leap frog CS5 and MC5 to remain competitive.

We've been using Mac Pros as servers for years now... it has more function than the Xserve but is just not rack mountable. No big deal. And who used Shake that its loss makes an impact? Apple could cut Motion and I don't think many would care.
Just because it's not a big deal for you doesn't mean it's not a big deal for others. For example, our production technology guys are finally happy to be phasing out an old 30TB SAN that's taking up 3-4 times the space of the new 60TB SAN. Less space, less power, less cooling, less money to build and maintain for a bigger, better SAN. I can only imagine what they'd do if someone came in and said "Okay, we are replacing all your 1RU servers with Mac Pros".

As far as Shake goes, I'd say all the people doing higher end VFX work felt multiple stings from Apple. First was killing the Windows version. Second was keeping the price high for the Linux version while severely discounting the Mac version. Third was ceasing development of it in 2006 even though it was arguably best in class software. It's a testament to the guys at Nothing Real (the creators of Shake) that it was still viable for so many years after Apple killed it (copies of Shake on eBay still go for, or near, full retail price). AFAIK Nuke has come in to fill the void left by Shake.

Doesn't violence once begat more violence? I mean by any means necessary isn't all that great to help your cause.

Not necessarily. ACT UP was a very aggressive group in the 80's that used that motto to bring attention to the AIDS crisis. I didn't like them or their tactics much at all at the time either. But you know what? It worked. They definitely served their purpose and are responsible for bringing serious attention to HIV/AIDS. Because you know what? Standing up to bullies like social conservatives works.

What doesn't work is letting them walk all over you, like they've been doing for decades. I'm talking about people who, no matter what you do, will NEVER respect you unless you stand up to them. Sometimes, violence is the answer. I'm sorry, but that's just a sad truth. It should always be the last resort, but it is the only answer sometimes. If people like this think you'll never fight back, you'll always lose. Because you know why? They think we're evil. They think we're the enemy. They've dehumanized us to such an extent that they think it's OK to beat the crap out of us, take our rights and even try to take our children. Would you sit still for that? They will never see us as even remotely human. And if we sit there and take it, we'll never get anywhere. These are not people you play nice with, because they won't play nice back. They are going out of their way to hurt us. There is no doubt about that.

I mean like, I have the new brit Femme Fatale album, ripped it to FLAC.

I used MAX to convert it to ALAC and everything is fine, but when I checked the bit rates of each individual songs in iTunes they were different, is it supposed to be like this or is it some problem with MAX and how it encodes them?

Like one song would have 900 something and another song would have 1100 something, it's weird.

Apple should simply look at your posts and do the opposite. Success guaranteed.

I don't see your point other than trying to embarrass another user of this forum. Unless Apple is planning on integrating more social aspects into Maps, I don't see why they need to spend resources on this. And given Apple's history with trying to create social products, I don't have much faith in them doing just that. If Apple thinks they can do it better, all the more power to them. But if they are just creating their own Maps because they don't like Google, then I don't see how the users benefit.
